Most visitors pack meals from Kharkhorin or arrange catering through their tour company for any extended stay. Herding families offer traditional dairy products, mutton, and milk tea—genuine cultural experience but not for everyone's taste. The nearest proper restaurants are back in Kharkhorin, about an hour's drive away.

Late May through early September offers ideal visiting conditions when weather is warmest and steppe roads most passable.
