Day Trips from Mongolia
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park loop
USD 35, 50 including park fee, lunch and shared jeepThe classic quick escape: 50 km of paved road and suddenly you're among turtle-shaped granite outcrops, meadows dotted with white gers, and the glacier-scooped Terelj River. Hike to the 280 m spire "Small Gun," ride short-necked camels, then finish with buuz dumplings at a family camp that keeps a pet golden eagle.
Karakorum & Erdene Zuu Monastery
USD 55, 70 including transport, monastery ticket and roadside lunchThe 13th-century Mongol capital is now a quiet village. But the surviving stone turtles and Erdene Zuu's 16th-century walls, built from the palace ruins, let you time-travel. Inside the monastery museum you'll see the miniature city model commissioned by Kublai Khan and a silk robe fragment said to be Genghis's.
Khustain Nuruu Wild Horse Reserve
USD 40 including park fee, shared van and lunch boxBiologists reintroduced the last true wild horse, Przewalski's takhi, here in 1992. A 2-hour drive across rolling steppe brings you to a core zone where 350-odd horses graze in plain sight. The visitor centre lends binoculars and a radio tracker so you can follow the stallion groups without a guide if you fancy hiking solo.
Bogd Khan Mountain & Manzushir Monastery Ruins
USD 20, 30 including bus fares, park ticket and summit snackThe south face of Bogd Khan Uul was protected in 1778, making it arguably the world's oldest national park. A steep 4 km footpath climbs past cedars to the 2,256 m summit for UB's best panorama, while the valley holds the 18th-century Manzushir ruins, bronze casting hearths still visible in the prayer-hall floor.
Gorkhi-Terelj to Gunjin Sum & Princess Temple
USD 70, 90 including sturdy vehicle, petrol and park permitsMost visitors stop at Turtle Rock. But if you push another 25 km on the rough east track you reach a riverside meadow where a Manchurian princess built a small Buddhist temple in 1740. The building is now a museum of 19th-century thangkas, and the setting, larch forest, wolf prints on the sandbar, feels like your private frontier.
Aglag Buteel Buddhist Art & Meditation
USD 60, 75 including donation, packed lunch and driverA contemporary hermit-monk spent twenty years carving granite cliffs into 30 m tall Garuda birds and 1000-arm Avalokiteshvara reliefsies. The outdoor gallery sits at 1,600 m so the air smells of juniper, and you can join 20-minute breathing sessions inside a cave gompa heated by yak-dung stove.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Zaisan Hill & Soviet Memorial plus Buddha Garden
USD 5 including bus and bottled airag at summit kioskClimb 300 steps for a 360-degree city-smog vs. wilderness view, then descend the backside path to the 23-m tall gilded Buddha inaugurated in 2006. The whole loop is under 4 km and you can still be back in time for a 10:00 business meeting.
Winter Ice Festival at Tuul River
USD 8 including tasting vouchersJanuary, February locals cut 1-m ice blocks to store spring water. You can try horse-sledge ice fishing and taste instant-frozen noodle soup. Festival site is only 12 km west of the city centre.
Nairamdal Flower Park & UB Ethnographic Quickie
USD 10 including coffee and souvenirsIf you're flight-delayed or short on time, the city's own amusement-grounds contain a relocated 19th-century log temple and weekend wrestling matches. Combine with a lap through the nearby State Department Store for cashmere socks and you've ticked "culture" and "shopping" before lunch.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.

- ✓ Weather swings 20 °C in a day even in July, pack fleece, wind-shell and sunhat together; October, April trips need full winter gear as, 20 °C at midday is common.
- ✓ Drivers quote in Mongolian tögrög but often accept USD; small-denomination USD 1 and 5 notes work for roadside snacks when you're out of tögrög.
- ✓ Park permits are usually included in tour-van price; if bussing independently pay the ₮3,000, ₮5,000 fee at the painted steel box at the gate, rangers do check.
- ✓ Guesthouse tour desks cluster west of Sukhbaatar Square. Shop around the same evening before you go, as operators share passengers and prices converge after 20:00.
- ✓ Mobile data covers all routes listed. The last lost-signal spot is around 30 km outside UB on the way to Terelj, download offline maps just in case.
- ✓ Tuesday and Wednesday are quietest at every site; Chinese tour buses and domestic school groups typically run Friday, Sunday.
- ✓ If you need a toilet, petrol stations appear every 40, 60 km on the main highways. In the interior, ask at any ger, etiquette is to accept a tea offer afterward.
