The classic quick escape: 50 km of paved road and suddenly you're among turtle-shaped granite outcrops, meadows dotted with white gers, and the glacier-scooped Terelj River. Hike to the 280 m spire "Small Gun," ride short-necked camels, then finish with buuz dumplings at a family camp that keeps a pet golden eagle.

The 13th-century Mongol capital is now a quiet village. But the surviving stone turtles and Erdene Zuu's 16th-century walls, built from the palace ruins, let you time-travel. Inside the monastery museum you'll see the miniature city model commissioned by Kublai Khan and a silk robe fragment said to be Genghis's.

Biologists reintroduced the last true wild horse, Przewalski's takhi, here in 1992. A 2-hour drive across rolling steppe brings you to a core zone where 350-odd horses graze in plain sight. The visitor centre lends binoculars and a radio tracker so you can follow the stallion groups without a guide if you fancy hiking solo.

The south face of Bogd Khan Uul was protected in 1778, making it arguably the world's oldest national park. A steep 4 km footpath climbs past cedars to the 2,256 m summit for UB's best panorama, while the valley holds the 18th-century Manzushir ruins, bronze casting hearths still visible in the prayer-hall floor.

Most visitors stop at Turtle Rock. But if you push another 25 km on the rough east track you reach a riverside meadow where a Manchurian princess built a small Buddhist temple in 1740. The building is now a museum of 19th-century thangkas, and the setting, larch forest, wolf prints on the sandbar, feels like your private frontier.

A contemporary hermit-monk spent twenty years carving granite cliffs into 30 m tall Garuda birds and 1000-arm Avalokiteshvara reliefsies. The outdoor gallery sits at 1,600 m so the air smells of juniper, and you can join 20-minute breathing sessions inside a cave gompa heated by yak-dung stove.
